Introducing you to Överkalix Camping – Start/Finish/CP #4

Today I want to introduce you to Överkalix Camping where we will be hosted by Sofi Holmgren and her team.

Överkalix Camping has got a campground with 85 tent sites, 20 spots for caravans and 11 great cabins of different sizes. It is located right next to the Kalix River, giving you some stunning views!
In the summertime there is a heated pool, outdoor fitness, playground for the kids and plenty of space to explore – if you ever want to check Överkalix out with your entire family in the warmer months of the year. Like Jockfall it is also a perfect place to use as a base for winter adventures in and around Överkalix.

During the Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra, Överkalix Camping will be one of the places where athletes and crew will stay. Furthermore, it is where our race will start February 7th and it is right next to the so called Folkets Hus Överkalix, where we will have our checkpoint #4, the finish of the 185 km and a few days later also the finish for the 485 km race.

Firepot official partner for expedition meals

I am very happy to announce that the British company Firepot will be the official partner for expedition meals at the Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra.

I have tried out quite a few brands over the years and most of these were okay. Firepot meals stand out. They are exceptional!

Athletes who sign up for the race get a 15% discount on any orders via the Firepot website. Also, athletes can place an order with free delivery to Sweden. The meals will be received by us and are then either available for pick-up at race headquarter or delivered to the participant’s accommodation.

SOTO new MLAU sponsor

SOTO was founded in 1978 in Japan and introduced to the world market in 2010. Since then, they have been awarded five coveted industry awards for their flaming devices. Dedicated to generating and integrating the “Blue Flame” in every flaming device conceived, SOTO’s engineers have devoted their lives to creating products that reach a maximum sustainable flame in the least possible amount of time. Devices that can be trusted to function in extreme cold and chilling winds. Every effort is made to provide the highest safety and technical standards at all phases of production, resulting in an enhanced outdoor experience for end-users of SOTO’s products.

At the SOTO stove I recommend for the Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra is the Stormbreaker. I have seen quite a few good stoves over the last few years but the quality of the SOTO Stormbreaker is unique. When you get it out of the box you immediately can tell that someone put their heart and soul into developing this product and that there was no room for compromise on anything. It’s pretty amazing!

The SOTO Stormbreaker comes with some unique features, e.g. a dual-purpose jet that works with liquid gas and gasoline. So, no fiddling around if you need to change your fuel source. It is very powerful and yet efficient. Cookware sits low to a burner head that has of over 300 micro flames. It is stable, packs compact and does not need pre-heating. When you pump it there is a mechanism that shows you when there is sufficient pressure.

The SOTO Stormbreaker will be available as a rental stove for the MLAU. For detailed information, please in our section on available rentals.

From Överkalix to Mars!

After having joined us already several times in the Yukon, Dr. Mathias Steinach from the Center of Space Medicine Berlin and his team will also travel with us to Överkalix.

The Center of Space Medicine Berlin is a research facility which is dedicated on research of medical and physiological changes of the human in extreme environments such as high altitudes, hot and cold climates, fields of sports and exercise physiology and eventually space medicine with low and zero gravity. The Center of Space Medicine is a combination of working groups and was founded in the year 2000, at the renowned Charité in Berlin, Germany.

Dr. Steinach has already been able to make some very interesting discoveries. Coming to Överkalix will allow him to collect more data and continue his research.

Via email I will send out more information to all athletes who have so far signed up or expressed interest in the race. This information will contain details on what Dr. Steinach is looking for, how data is collected and how the athletes who are part of the study will get access to some very interesting feedback.

Introducing you to Jockfall – CP #2

With this post I would like to introduce you to Jockfall which is checkpoint #2 at the Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra.

It is simply beautiful! Great people, an amazing restaurant with super good food, very nice cabins and facilities.

In the summer it is one of Sweden’s best places for salmon fishing. Also, it’s a great starting point for mountainbiking, hiking and canoeing. In the winter it is perfect for snowshoe hikes, snowmobile tours, ice fishing and many more adventures.

Things to do in Överkalix: Meet Hilda and Petter

Apart from providing you all with the information you need for a great race, I will also use the next couple of months to introduce you to some of the things that you can do in Överkalix and surrounding area before or after the race. Maybe you have for friends and family members who travel with you but are not in the Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra? The activities and place I will inform you about will be great for them, too.

Like myself you probably associate Swedish Lapland with the Sami culture and reindeers. A great place to get really up close to some reindeers is at Kaati’s Reindeers & Design. Hilda and Petter are waiting for you! Your host Anna-Lena Kaati will be more than happy to tell you anything you could possibly want to know about these beautiful animals. Also, she has got a small shop at her place that sells very nice souvenirs.

Survival Training Course

We have found a great partner to organise the course for all Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra 2021 athletes who want to or need to do some training before the race. Per from Rimfrost Adventures is very experienced when it comes to winter survival and bushcraft. The course details are set. You will find an overview in the Training Course section and the full details on the Rimfrost Adventures website.

Per is fully in charge of anything to do with the course. He is putting it on with his company. So, for any questions regarding the course and to make a booking, please contact him.

As a reminder, any athletes who do not have experience with extremely cold temperatures need to do a winter survival course. The course also does accept participants with experience who just want to use it to get some additional training in.

New race in Överkalix, Swedish Lapland

Start and finish of the Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra (MLAU) will be in Överkalix, Sweden. It will enable the athletes to experience Swedish-Lapland, an area that is often referred to as Europe’s last wilderness. The start date is February 7th, 2021. Available distances in our first year will be 185 and 485 km. Possible disciplines are foot, xc-ski and mountainbike.

Dealing with Covid-19

Like the rest of the world, Sweden has been affected by Covid-19. Most of you will know that the Swedish government has, in certain aspects, taken a less strict approach when it comes to the prevention of spreading the virus. That does not mean that people can do anything and that there are no regulations at all. I also feel that we as foreigners coming to this beautiful country have a very strong responsibility to do anything we can in order not to bring Covid-19 to the region where we are being hosted.

Therefore, we have to make changes to a lot of procedures we normally have in place, before, during and after the race. However, I still believe that you will experience great hospitality and when you are out on the trail, looking up a the Northern Lights and breathing the fresh, cold air, you will gather the energy, motivation and strenght you need when you get back home – to stay positive until hopefully soon this pandemic will come to an end.

Another reason why we need to have certain measures in place is that without distancing and hygiene just one positive case of Covid-19 may mean the entire race needs to end while we are in the middle of it. If we are smart and cautious, we should be able to prevent this.

Our Covid-19 operational plan will exceed what current Swedish regulations demand. The following are the main measures that will affect athletes:

  • You are aked to try and be as careful as you can while travelling, i.e. please wear a face mask (covering nose and mouth at all times), keep your distance and stick to the rules of recommended hygiene.
  • Once in Sweden we ask for permanent distancing of 2 metres at all times – before, during and after the race.
  • We will have solutions in place for recommended hygiene measures, e.g. hand washing stations and desinfectants.
  • There will not be a pre-race dinner.
  • Our race briefing will be sent out in writing and we will see if we can set-up an online meeting for Q&A.
  • Race checkpoints will serve hot water but none of them will have meals – which means you need to have sufficient expedition meals/food yourself.
  • We have yet to decide about sleeping inside at the checkpoints. There is a chance that access to the inside in most places will be limited to emergencies. The good news is that temperatures in this area of Swedish Lapland should not go below – 35° Celsius.
  • When you come in contact with crew at checkpoints – even if you can keep your 2 meters of distance – you are asked to cover nose and mouth with a face mask. This also goes for the time before the race.
  • Even though the local regulations may not require it, we also ask you to wear a face mask when coming in contact with the local population, e.g. when entering or leaving a restaurant, on transfers or when inside for grocery shopping, etc.

We are also analysing how we can implement a Covid-19 test strategy that is possible for all, makes sense and helps us to further reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Soon there will be a Covid-19 section in our menu and we will keep updating it.

I realise that some of these rules are painful. I for example always really enjoy our pre-race dinner and seeing the excitement of everyone the night before the start. However, I am sure that the time on the trail will make up for it.

If of course you are sick and tired of distancing, hygiene and other Covid-19 related rules, it means it likely is better if you join us in 2022.

Signing up for the MLAU

The Application & Waiver is ready. Anybody who want to join us at the startline in Överkalix, please send me an email and I will provide you with the forms. All athletes who had signed up for the Yukon will get priority. Any remaining spots will go to people who had already expressed an interest. If there are not enough spots I will open a waiting list.

Althletes who had signed up for the Yukon and will not be able to sign up for Sweden, will get an 80% refund on the deposit. Athletes who had signed up for the Yukon and now will come to Sweden will get 100% refund on their MYAU deposit and will receive a new invoice for the race in Sweden. I have to do that due to VAT regulations.

Any athletes who had not signed up for MYAU but want to come to Sweden will have the same procedures in place that we use for Canada, i.e.

  • I will have a skype interview with you in English to discuss important aspects of the race.
  • Anybody without previous outdoor experience in extremely cold temperatures, will have to do a 4-day winter survival course in Kalix before the race.

Rental Gear

All rental gear I have is in the Yukon. I still intend to provide rental gear in Överkalix. I simply will build up a stock of gear there, too. In order to have everything ready in time, I would like to ask all participants to confirm their rental gear needs asap. Please check out the rental gear section to see what will be available.

A big THANK YOU

I want to send out a big thank you to:
