Renting products for the Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra

Some of the gear you will need for the MLAU can be very expensive if you have to buy it. Other gear you may only need once or may not want to transport it all the way to Sweden and back. Rental gear can be a good solution.

In this section you find an overview on the gear that you can rent for your participation in the MLAU. If you want to rent please contact me:

Robert Pollhammer
Phone: +49 (0) 8825-8359366
Email: info@thegreatoutdoors.de

Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

All below rental prices include tax and are regardless of the race distance you signed up for. If you participate the survival courses taking place in the Kalix immediately prior to the race, there is no extra charge and the gear will be available for your course.

Rental gear that is returned damaged will be invoiced at the full recommended retail price (rental fee deducted).

P.S. Another way to save some money may be to buy or borrow used gear from athletes who have done an Arctic race already.

Small: 71 – 86 cm
Medium: 86 – 102 cm
Large: 97 – 112 cm

The following instructions are from Snowsled:

  • Bear in mind that you may well feel more comfortable wearing your harness slightly lower than your waist, possibly at hip level. The sizes above allow for thermal and shell clothing layers.
  • Dual density foam padding for increased comfort and load bearability. At times you may find it more comfortable to haul with the waistbelt loosened.
  • Adjustable shoulder harness included.
  • Standard harnesses are designed for hauling by either ropes or rigid shafts – our rental harness will have both.

Snowshoes

The type of snowshoes you will get for rent will depend on your weight and your footwear, i.e. if you weigh more you need larger snowshoes and if you have running shoes you will need snowshoes with a binding that works with this type of shoes. If you use hiking or trekking shoes the binding may be different.

In any case we will rent out snowshoes that are as light as possible and up for the job. When you make your booking for the snowshoes we will establish what model works best for you.

The rental price regardless of race distance is EUR 79.00.

Expedition Tent

Because of relatively high chances of snowfall and less challenging time limits (if compared to the MYAU), we expect to see more people in tents than what we are used to in the Yukon. Of course it remains up to the athlete to make the decision if a tent or a bivi bag is preferred.  Those who have opted for a tent in the Yukon often chose a Rab Latok Summit and following discussions in our facebook group, feedback on this tent has been very good. That is why we will offer the Rab Latok Summit for rent at the MLAU, too.

Expedition Down Jacket

One of the most expensive items for any Arctic adventure is the necessary expedition down jacket. That is why we decided to offer one for rent. It also will take quite a bit of bulk out of you luggage if you rent one. For the expected temperature range during the MLAU your expedition down jacket needs at least 350 g (size L) of high quality down fill. Montane’s Apex 8000 Down Jacket provides more than that. So, it’s warmer than what you would need under normal circumstances. However, keeping in mind that you should only use/need it when you are stationary, the additional warmth is fine. It also gives you an idea of what type of jacket you will need when you go to races or places that reach – 40 degrees or colder.

Weight: 1,380 g (size M)
Materials:

  • Outer: 100% Nylon (PERTEX® QUANTUM PRO with a highly water-resistant internal coating and DWR)
  • Reinforcements: 100% Nylon (PERTEX® QUANTUM PRO rip-stop with a highly water-resistant internal coating and DWR)
  • Lining: 100% Nylon (PEAQ Down)
  • Insulation: 500 g (size M) of 90/10 water-resistant fluorocarbon-free HyperDRY™ goose down at 850+ fill; Responsible Down Standard (RDS) and Track my Down™ and 100% Polyester (60 g/m² PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation with Cross Core™ technology) across the back and shoulders

The set of features of the Apex 8000 Jacket is incredible. For the full list please visit www.montane.com.

The jacket retails for EUR 650.00. The rental is EUR 189.00.
