That was quick! We have our Bright Equipment Lapland Arctic Ultra (BELAU) start date for 2026! We will all gather March 1st to hit the trails from our Grand Arctic Resort start line in Överkalix.

Some changes

One of the suggestions after this year’s BELAU was to offer a distance of 85 km for all those who want to try a winter ultra and spend a night out – which is not possible in the 50 km distance because it has a 14-hour time limit. It felt like a great idea and that’s why we will include 85 km into next year’s options. Basically, this race distance follows the route of the 185 and 500 km athletes and will not take the shortcut of the 50 km to Jockfall, which is where the finish line will be. The Rules have already been updated to include the 85 km.

It was also suggested that we offer a 315 km race distance, i.e. skip the first loop for those who want to do that. Whilst this is possible, we likely won’t implement it in 2026 as it would have quite a few implications for our logistics and schedule. I will give it some more thought and update in case 315 km does become possible next winter.

Some advice for all those new to winter ultras and/or the BELAU

If you are new to winter ultras my advice would be to go for the 85 or max. the 185 km distance. A race like this is very different to a “normal” ultra and it’s a steep learning curve. If you go for a shorter distance, it’s way more likely to have a positive outcome, i.e. a finisher medal rather than a DNF. When you plan your overall travel time, keep in mind that you will likely need to participate in the 4-day training course prior to the race. The timing for the training course is already confirmed, the fee for it will be confirmed soon.

Should you be a BELAU race veteran or have done other winter ultras, please make sure you have a good look at the Rules, especially when it comes to required gear. And check the Rules again later in the year as there may have been updates.

In general, if you know for sure that you want to join us next winter, sign up as early as possible. That means you have the lowest possible entry fee, you can book your flights earlier (which should mean lower flight cost) and you have more time to deal with all the aspects of preparing yourself – from training to making sure you have all the right kit.

No matter how much experience, I would always recommend you get a return flight home at the earliest for the day after the official deadline for your finish. If you do the 500 km you may of course end up being faster than the 10-day cut-off. In that case, maybe get a ticket option that allows you to change your flight booking at low or no cost.
